Another attempt at re-inventing the wheel and the Japanese bamboo mat in making maki sushi. For the fun of it we pretend to like it, because it is such a silly looking sushi roller machine. It is made by Germans by the designers from studio Osko + Deichmann. It will showcase in June at the Kitchen Ecology Exhibition in Los Angeles.

Bodylicious X and Bodylicious Y are pieces of ceramic plates made by the Japanese designer Hiroshi Tsunoda. It was according to his website inspired by Nyotaimori, a tradition where food is presented on the body of a naked woman (and much sought after here on SOD…).

I love sushi flatware. This designer, Vikki Smyth, is quite special. Her approach is for from traditional Japanese. She makes food presentation and table-top sets for high end hotels (W, Wynn’s places) according to Gizmondo. I am into baby things these days, and surprisingly - the little guy has actually not been subjected to that much sushi stuff yet. He has no sushi toys, no sushi clothes - but as I said - yet. I went bib shopping today…

A great post over at the blog “Stuff white people like“, where sushi is the topic #42. Apparently there are three types of white sushi eating peoples;
- The spicy tuna/california roll eaters; who get their fix at places named “Rock And Roll!” “Magic Sushi Company,” or Trader Joes-type supermarkets.
- The entry level Sushi snob, these are people who still love rolls, but are willing to branch out to Salmon and Tuna sashimi, maybe even eel
- The white sushi snob - where you only sit at the sushi bar, will try to order in Japanese and will only order Omakase. These people will often be extremely critical of anyone who eats a roll of any type or does not properly flip the nigiri into their mouths…

An absolutely lovely porcelain sushi set from Austria’s Feinedinge handmade ceramics. The choice of colors and images for the embellishment are beautiful and I would love to have some of these.

Having a sushi party? Check out this cool toy that came out this summer from toymaker Bandai Namco. It’s an automatic sushi roller–just put seaweed, rice, and your ingredients of choice in the little orange machine, turn the rollers, and voila! You have perfect, tightly rolled whatever-makis in a matter of seconds. The roller is meant to be a toy for 6-12 years old girls, but I guess it serves no harm for people who are looking for a fast sushi snack.
