For the love of the looks of fugu

I have never tried to eat Fugu. It sounds scary, but I will try it if (when!?) I get the chance. I do love how the blowfish looks though. Today I went to this blog Grow a brain, who very often posts interesting things about sushi. There I found this really beautiful picture of this tiny blowfish above. I think it is absolutely adorable. Blowing up like that is such a cute survival strategy. I wanted to see some more blowfish images. Here are some I found Googling it. Under is as link to the articles where I found these pictures:

Wasabi - fiery food for forplay?
I have read that eel is suppose to have an effect on your ability to perform… in bed. In an article on “Natural Aphrodisiacs” I also found that wasabi might have a similar effect:

“Wasabi (Horseradish) — While some people believe that Sushi has aphrodisiacal effects all on its own, my Japanese friends let me in on a little secret. Apparently, that green stuff that comes with it ( Wasabi or horseradish) is what’ll really get your twig and berries ripe and ready. So the next time you go out for sushi, ask for some extra Wasabi; it’s a kick and will make your eyes tear, but you can make your gal’s eyes tear when you take her home and show her Wasaaaaaaabi.”

Wasabi pea review

Are you a wasabi pea addict? Can’t stop eating them? Can’t stop thinking about them? Me too! At least before this test… I wanted to find out which brand that had the best wasabi peas out there. I did not even know that there so many before I went to LA and visited a proper Japanese supermarket I found lots of different ones. Then I just knew I had to “sacrifice myself” in the name of science and do a test run of them all. It would be a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta to do it, right? :) (lucky this was not in Japan I guess…)

So - here is my verdict. As with the food from some sushi bars too; not all of them are worth eating! If someone bites into one of the bad ones the first time and generalizes based on that, then they are missing out on the good wasabi pea experience. Here are some pointers. I have put them in my preferred order.

I did not know how you open and eat a sea urchins straight from the ocean. Maybe I will have to try this at some point. They do make it sound good even though I have a hard time with things that look slimy…

Live sushi? 20Sep07

What kind of sushi is this???
It is definately not for me.

Sake

I find Sake labels very beautiful. I found an image from “The Book of Sake: A Connoisseur’s Guide” by Philip Harper that explains also how to read the sake labels. My Japanese is very elementary and my Sake experience not that thorough, so I needed a guide.

Tuna - a threatened delicacy

Over-fishing has made Atlantic bluefin tuna a prized delicacy. This comes a century after the fish were scorned in Europe as pet food, according to studies that urges for better international protection. Hear, hear! “Tuna are now like floating goldmines out in the ocean,” says Brian MacKenzie of the Technical University of Denmark.

This article tells the interesting story of the Bluefin Tuna. The way it has been perceived and praised have completely changed over the years. The Bluefin tuna used to teem in the summers in the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea a century ago as part of migrations that could take them 16 000km a year. Now they are rarely seen in our region after a burst of industrial fishing from 1910-1950. Hmm…

Fresh salmon

Many consumers are unsure when they’re going to assess the fish’s quality. Actually, it’s easy to find out whether it’s as it should be. Scientist Margrethe Esaiassen at Fiskeriforskning is an expert in fish quality. She gives us three rules of thumb for fresh salmon and cod.

Tokyo Cube

Tokyocube is a very cool online lifestyle magazine targeting people interested in “fresh and fun online information on the ever-more fashionable Japanese lifestyle”. On there I found another great article on nutrition content and calories in individual nigiri sushi pieces and makis that might be of interest:

Fish and ingredients in sushi

I have heard that Tuesday and Friday are suppose to be the best days for eating sushi and Monday the worst. Here is the reasoning behind it:
