Sushi is good. Sushi is great! Now they are also super heroes. The cartoon series “Sushi Pack” from American Greetings Properties is going to be shown on the American TV-channel CBS targeting the audience between 9-11 year olds. And me. Is this a big sushi conspiracy? To prep your kids as the future sushi eaters?

I have read that eel is suppose to have an effect on your ability to perform… in bed. In an article on “Natural Aphrodisiacs” I also found that wasabi might have a similar effect:
“Wasabi (Horseradish) — While some people believe that Sushi has aphrodisiacal effects all on its own, my Japanese friends let me in on a little secret. Apparently, that green stuff that comes with it ( Wasabi or horseradish) is what’ll really get your twig and berries ripe and ready. So the next time you go out for sushi, ask for some extra Wasabi; it’s a kick and will make your eyes tear, but you can make your gal’s eyes tear when you take her home and show her Wasaaaaaaabi.”

At the Natsumi restaurant in New York, chef Haru Konagaya has made his own version of soy sauce. It is called Natsumi’s new vinegar, and will probably freak the sushi purists out - since it is actually balsamic vinegar. According to the chef this adds a ginger-like sweetness to soy sauce for dipping sashimi and maki, and he feels so strongly about the combination of raw fish and Italian vinegar that the Theater District eatery has put its own label on an aged import from Acetaia San Giacomo in Campagnola Emilia (100-milliliter bottles are $18).

My husbands family lives in LA, so we have been paying close attention to the raging fires the past couple of days. Luckily none of our relatives have been in harms way. It is good to see that this disaster is handled better than what happened in New Orleans. There seems to be a great generosity for wanting to help out. Also so among sushi chefs.
San Jose Mercury News reports that Nobu in Malibu, one of Los Angeles’ most famous restaurants “served a buffet of sushi and seafood as the blaze that burned out 4,500 acres started to die down. Manager Darren Kim said the buffet featured sushi, black cod, sea bass, king crab legs and lobster salad—thousands of dollars worth of quality seafood.”

The Japanese took it home. The winner of the Seven Sushi Samurai contest at the Eat-Japan Sushi Awards 2007 is Masashi Ogata! He represented the Asahizushi restaurant in Miyagi, Japan and won with his dish “Golden Shooting Star”.
“This ambitious dish recreates the exquisite taste and texture of shark’s fin, the traditional culinary speciality of Asashizushi’s homeground, whilst remaining 100% vegetarian. Assembling ingredients such as Japanese seaweed, fruit syrup, avocado and cornflakes (!), this is a truly remarkable culinary feat.” Mmm… Sounds interesting. And surprising. I have never tasted shark fin, but did not think it would taste anything like fruit syrup, avocado and cornflakes…

I have a problem I need your help with. This specific splog (spam blog) or scraper blog is currently using several of the sushi blogs RSS-feeds (sushiordeath.com, sushifaq.com and sushiday.com) to fill his own website with content. He has never asked me for permission to do this. This is an unfortunate part of RSS-publishing I guess.

Meetup.com is a way of meeting other people with similar interests. Like if you were looking for people to go watch football with, play bowling or say - eat sushi! Of course there are sushi meet ups all over the place. You just state your interest and your location - an voilà - you have your peers! Fantastic idea!

The sushi chef Masayoshi “Masa” Takayama was asked by the magazine New York Magazine last year (2006) to evaluate the best of the Santoku knives. Well, as a sushi chef, we expect him to be into good knives - and what the test shows is that price and quality is not necessary linked.
He tested ten knives straight from the box (no additional sharpening allowed) to chop onions, slicing boneless chicken and mincing parsley. He also tried slicing parchment paper, which is apparently his way of testing his favorite single-bevel Yanagi knife (a knife for everyday slicing, the blade is perfect for slicing long pieces of fish) after its daily session on the grindstone. He judged each of the knives for their balance, sharpness, cutting ability, and how long it kept its edge. They are ranked below in order of preference. Here is the list:

Do you remember Habbo Hotel? I remember it for being one of the first, really original communities online. To some degree it still is I think. This 3D pixelworld that invites you in for things like chats, a swim in the pool, live music concerts or sex education (!) is a weird mix of a game, what feels like an actual, physical environment and virtual reality. They have an amazingly 75 million users registered! Now they also do sushi! They recently had a competition where you were to build your own sushi restaurant. From the invitation for the competition:

I found this online image tag viewer while “Stumbling“, where you can externally search for photographs tagged with sushi in Flickr. You can of course search for whatever tag you would like, really. But we searched for sushi. And sashimi. And bento…
Because in addition to getting a gallery of 36 images at the time, you also get to see what other tags are related to sushi in Flickr, and in that way you can dive into whatever takes your fancy while watching beautiful photographs. I was going in loops - sushi, sashimi, bento, lunch, sushi…

It also contains a glossary of terms, as well as global distributor listing with details of around 250 companies. I think this is written and focused mainly on the UK market, but I have not seen the Directory, so I am not sure.
If you are in the food & drink industry you are lucky - you can get it free of charge (p +p extra). We are in the food and trade business, right?
You can get the book from Eat Japans website:
