Hai Sushi - Bryn, OsloWritten by: Lise V., OsloThis was a huge surprise for me, living in suburbia. I have a natural fear for exotic food sold outside of ring 3, so I haven’t dared trying this place.

Today i caved in, and called to order a big bento box. First surprise; I had to wait 35 minutes to pick it up. First sign of quality. When I opened the bento box, I found delicate sushi with lots of ginger. The nigri was good size, the maki a little bit big for my taste.

Mekong Cafè Bar - Grünerløkka, OsloMekong Cafè Bar is another of these “thai viet sushi places”. It is located at the top of Grünerløkka, competing with next door neighbours like “Sult”. The closest sushi bar I guess is Kitty sushi. Go there instead. My general advice is stick to food you are passionate about. Sushi is NOT just some rice with fish on top… Mekog Cafè Bar is not anywhere near my top sushi list.

Sushi & Thaimat - St.Hanshaugen, OsloSushi & Thaimat has been recommended on this site before. Thank you guys! Not all of the recommendations we get we agree with, but that is a good thing. It is good that we have our own favorites around town, so that we won’t all be in line at the same places… :)

This recommendation I totally agree with though. Sushi & Thaimat was a good experience and I will come back for more…

Grand sushi - Carl Berners Plass, OsloRight next to Phero sushi you find Grand Sushi. That there is a market for these two sushi take out places up here in addition to Sushihuset just a bit further down on Carl Berners Plass is a mystery, but they are all doing ok it seems like.

Of the three I think I like Grand Sushi the best. It smells clean, the fish is properly kept and laid out, the service is friendly and quite fast, so as a take out place on my way from work, it works very well.

Sun Sushi - Torshov, OsloSun Sushi comes highly recommended by the locals in Torshov, so we were looking forward to going up there. It is one out of at least five sushi bars I know of in the area, so I guess we have to go back up. This sounded like the favorite among many, though. We thought it was just ok.

But it is a neighborhood place and that is nice to have. I would say it also is a typical take away place, sitting there was not either pleasant or inspiring.

Eat Sushi&Wok - Sentrum, OsloI am not sure how long this restaurant has been a sushi restaurant too, but I was a bit worried it would be another thai/vietnamese restaurant wanting to also be a Japanese restaurant. Seldom a good move.

Eat is quite a big restaurant in size, and it also looks quite cosy from the outside. The interior is inviting and it makes you feel like you want to go inside and give them a chance.

The service was just ok. They were not paying much attention to us, and it was far from full when we were there. A bit disappointing.

Jonoe SushiWritten by: Pål, Oslo

Jonoe Sushi is a new and very good sushi and asian restaurant located on the west side - in Vinderen, Oslo.

It is founded by two of the star chefs from Alex Sushi and House of Sushi.

Jonoe is a perfect and popular place for lunch, so be sure to book a table in advance.

Bambus - Majorstuen, OsloAnother “Thai restaurant really, but now also sushi bar” kind of place. After a long wait on a not too busy evening, we finally got the waiters attention. The sushi bar part of the restaurant does not seem to get the main attention of the place. The fish was looking kind of lonely there in the sushi case.

We ordered a set menu between us - the sushi combo, which had both nigiri, sashimi and maki. In addition we had the softshell crab. And a sushi pizza. Just because it sounded so weird. :)

Sushi night - Photo: © Håvard Gjelseth

With 16 people in our apartment, we felt a bit crowded - but in a good way. When you just sit down and get served food in your own kitchen it’s kind of weird, but in the skilled hands of Arne Austbø from Taku Catering, we were so taken care of. It was a wonderful evening and a sushi experience out of the ordinary!

Mr. Austbø is kind of a novelty in the Oslo restaurant scene. You know this when he comes with his own photographer from the most prestigious financial newspaper in Norway following him around. We’re trendsetters… Really!! Taku Catering is just this one guy who comes to your house and cooks fantastic sushi for you. Here is how an evening like that can look like.

Cosmo Thai & Sushi - Aker Brygge, OsloCosmo Thai and Sushi has been around for about a year, but it was only recently that I heard about this place. Weird really, considering their food and also quite stylish interior and restaurant look-and-feel. To cut it short - I really liked this place!

They are located just on the opposite corner from one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Oslo - Yaya’s in Aker Brygge.

Sushi Phero - Carl Berners Plass, OsloWe had the need for a late night snack and were really aiming for the kebab place just around the corner from this restaurant. I had never noticed this tiny sushi take away place before. They opened in the winter of 2007, so not been around too long. Another sushi restaurant opened just around the corner in oktober, so they are getting competition. According to the woman behind the counter the neighbors prefer their food to the new one. Maybe competition is a good thing. At least they have to work hard to always be better than the other place…

Sushi King - Majorstua, OsloWe walked by Sushi King just on a Saturday for a quick lunch, because that was the kind of place it looked like. And it was. It is another typical hamburger place turned sushi bar.

The whole place smelled really bad, which the guy behind the counter explained to be from the fact that he was making sushi rice vinegar. But to do that at the same time serving people in this tiny place… Not pleasant. It did not make us want to try much of his fish, so we went for cooked and spicy this time.

Japo Sushi - Frogner, OsloJapo Sushi looks like a tiny place from the outside. But it has some style. I actually was surprised by how much bigger it felt when we came inside, using four gigantic mirrors on each side giving the room an imaginary depth and space.

We got lucky and came in front of a huge line of take away orders. I guess friday nights are busy, which our next table guests got to feel in particular. They got their food, but never their drinks, so they ended up leaving before even touching their sushi. Quite upset it seemed like. Hmm.

Frogner Sushi Bar - Frogner, OsloFrogner Sushi Bar just happened to be there when we needed lunch one Sunday afternoon. And it was that kind of place. Nothing special, but ok sushi to go.

Not quite sure if I would like to have their sashimi menus, because their fish looked quite sad and unappetizing actually. Again - this was on a sunday, so they might look and smell better on a “fresh fish day”…

Eat Nydalen - Nydalen, OsloNydalen is a bit unknown territory for me. It seems like a nice area, with lots of businesses and since the business school moved up there, they also get a lot of young kids wandering around, which makes the whole place feel like a happening place. We ventured up there to have lunch and try out “Eat Nydalen”, a viet-thai-sushi place… Did I hear sceptical? Yup. And founded.

This place is not run by Japanese and they have no respect for the Japanese food traditions. They have some of their stuff on the menu in Japanese, but get plain outright annoyed if you say you want unagi for eel, to mention an example.
