Sushi Express won “Best in test” on take out sushi that was held between some of the take out sushi bars around town, so I was quite excited when I woke up this morning, thinking - ah, I have a sushi quest today! I will have some good sushi! Well.

Please avoid this sushi place….. being extremely hungry for a decent fish meal, leaving Norway, famous for its seafood, you are adviced to skip this place and select a pizza instead.
Sad, but necessary.
The sushi is not particularly fresh, thick slices of fish and too much rice on each nigiri piece. This place could have been ideal for Norwegian fish promotion.

Have I said it before? That I am so tired of bad sushi?
I guess part of the reason why I will not give this place a good review is because I have had a lot of sushi lately. Good sushi. And also great experiences. Here - I greeted them, asked them what they would recommend of todays fish, trying to give this “once a hamburger joint now turn sushi bar” a chance. Mostly because it came recommended. Well, according to the chef, everything was especially good that day, and they could not recommend anything in particular… Hmm. No help there. But - the fish did look quite fresh, so I tried some nigiri of salmon, eel and halibut, together with my tempura maki.

Sushi Deluxe just opened in May 2007 and it is located in the popular intersection between Schweigaardgate and Grønlandsleiret. It is great that there are several places opening up on the east side of town, and Le Meo Sushi - who also recently opened a restaurant on Grønland - will get a run for their money in Sushi Deluxe.
It looks a bit dodgy from the outside, and you can’t really call it a restaurant - it is a take out place with a couple of tables inside. In addition to sushi they also serve some other things like ice cream, cakes and some wok dishes, but it was their sushi menu was what we were after.

House of Sushi has three restaurants in Oslo. They claim that this is their flag ship restaurant, and being quite happy with their one in Skøyen, I was looking forward to going here. I was not let down as such, but…
What we had was all just - mmyeah - I don’t know; Just another sushi place doing what everyone else is doing - not excelling in any way - taste wise or presentation wise. Not inspired, and therefore not very inspiring.

This small sushi place has a very central location, just off of Karl Johans gate - the main street of Oslo. I used to go to it years ago when it was called Tampopo but I had not been back after it became Oishi Sushi. The fact that is resides in Skippergata might scare some customers away though.
We heard about Mikaku when we went looking for old Shogun. When we asked at Japantorget, they said that Shogun was considered to be the only proper Japanese restaurant in town. Unfortunately - that closed down, but not to worry - Mikaku is their new place. And it is quite Japanese. It has a huge menu with lots of stuff you rarely find elsewhere in Norway. If you also like other Japanese food other than sushi, they serve several different types of udon, tempura, several nabe dishes like teppanyaki, sukiyaki and shabushabu to mention some.

Here is my list of favorites for this month. Click on the links to read more about them.
1) Nodee, Majorstua - apparently, everybody’s favorites… And it is great, so just get in line!!
2) Nippon Art, Sentrum - it just feels more genuine than Alex
3) Alex Sushi, Solli plass - it is great. But still shi shi and expensive.
4) Sushi to Wok, Majorstua - I think it’s the tea
5) House of Sushi, Skøyen - I guess it was the starter.
Well. That was my list.
Now tell me yours!
Happy Sushi has a crappy location, and I am sorry to say that their food was not much better. They say that their prices makes you happy, but I don’t rate sushi first on price and then on quality of food. That will probably just make you sick.
This is an old coffee place turned sushi bar, but not with any grace or genuine feelings for the tradition of making sushi.
I was told this place was called Sushi and Baguette or something, but they must have changed the name because now it is called Mitsu Kafé. (I saw that there was some changes in prices from April on (2007), so maybe they changed owner?) The menu still have sushi AND baguettes for those that were worried about the change :). They also serve other types of Asian food.
It is really a dump. Lookswise. The service too was a bit not existing, you felt a bit uncomfortable just coming in, but their food was quite good. It really reminded me more of a hamburger bar than a sushi place.
Sushi Tokyo is a good stop on the way to or from the most beautiful park in Oslo; Vigelands-/Frognerparken.
The restaurant does not have a very cosy or romantic interior, but they have an ok sushi bar. Unfortunately you can’t sit at it. They also serve other Asian food, but seems to have sushi as their main focus.

Kitty’s Sushi is a very nice sushi place. It is reasonably cheap and have an extensive menu. The service is sometimes a bit snappy, but most of the time we get along fine. I like that it is central in Grünerløkka, and the prices are ok. I wish they had a bit more japanese style flatware and presentation skills.
Fuji at Skillebekk was a place I had not heard much about. It seemed like a happening place in the neighborhood, and was quite crowded when we were there. The restaurant lies in quite a nice area and it has a sushi bar where you can sit and watch them at work. Fuji is run by Chinese, and the experience was lacking the typical japanese touch and sophistication.
We ordered the yellow tale, eel and butterfish nigiri sushi, and of course tempura maki, soft shell crab maki in addition to the spicy tuna maki and the Fuji special maki. The chef surprised us by giving us some salmon sashimi with spring onion and a mountain of gari for starters. A good start.
Sushi&Wok at Aker Brygge used to be called East Sushi and Noodles I believe. I have been at their other restaurant at Majorstua several times which I quite like, and had high hopes for dinner. Especially their tempura maki and their brown rice tea is usually quite a treat. This restaurant even has a sushi bar about four people can sit at. Will have to try that next time.
We ordered both a sushi menu, and a sushi combo meal. The combo had my necessary tempura maki, and the combo had tuna, salmon, shrimp, halibut and red clam.
We had another go at House of Sushi, this time in their proper restaurant out at Skøyen. The venue is quite atmospheric, and having several chefs behind the counter was promising.
I have to say I was a bit reluctant to go back, and when the waiter took forever to come to our table to take our order we feared that this was not going to be any better experience… but in the end it turned out to be quite good.
