The restaurant part of the Goko Sushi Institute seemed to be a place to get a hold of Japanese news, and were selling different types of typical Japanese stuff in their restaurant. Why it is called a sushi institute I am not sure. Will have to check that out.

Rainbow dream…

I wish we had a Kuchi in Oslo. This was a restaurant I would love to go to on a regular basis. It had such an interesting menu that I was very sorry that we could not try it all.

We had their beautifully made rainbow maki, a tempura maki and a special maki that I can’t remember the name of.

Ryo - Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin

We had just arrived in Berlin and I needed some sushi. Ryo looked like a nice little neighborhood sushi place, so I had a go at it. It was empty and the staff was nowhere to see, they were all in the kitchen. After standing at the counter I had to call for them to give me any service.

San Fransisco is on my list to visit, and I will try and go by as many good places as possible. In the mean time, here some pointers to where you can find out where to get your sushi today. It sounds like a wonderfully sushi filled city!

Sushi chef - Taro AraiKotaro “Taro” Arai was born on Japan’s southernmost island of Kyushu. Taro’s parents opened a Japanese restaurant called Mikuni in Fair Oaks, Sacramento in 1987. Twenty years and several locations later, Mikuni is one of the most successful restaurant businesses in the Sacramento region.

Sushi chef Taro Arai is considered by some to be very imaginative, inventive, personable, unpredictable, energetic, eclectic, and even a little bit outrageous. Others think he might be taking it a bit too far from what’s considered traditional sushi.

Sushi made fun of in the movie Analyze that. A mobster (Robert De Niro) and his shrink (Billy Crystal) get together for some sushi — and mischief.

Pills and sake will make you act like a fool, even if you are a doctor…

I am not sure if it was sushi that made the president pass out there back in 1992, but this video shows President Bush becomes ill on a visit to Japan and vomits on Japanese Prime Minister Miyazawa Kiichi. Iiiik.

While the footage was widely seen of Bush recovering from having emptied his stomach contents on the leader of his host nation, the actual moment of puke was only shown once on US television, on ABCNews.

Mikaku - Parkveien, OsloWe heard about Mikaku when we went looking for old Shogun. When we asked at Japantorget, they said that Shogun was considered to be the only proper Japanese restaurant in town. Unfortunately - that closed down, but not to worry - Mikaku is their new place. And it is quite Japanese. It has a huge menu with lots of stuff you rarely find elsewhere in Norway. If you also like other Japanese food other than sushi, they serve several different types of udon, tempura, several nabe dishes like teppanyaki, sukiyaki and shabushabu to mention some.

Hideo Dekura is well known in Sydney as a sashimi and sushi expert. His special knife is made from a soft metal also used for samurai swords. The sharpening of the knife is also part of the ritual and is performed with great reverence, as the blade must be extremely sharp to carve the fish with a grace and simplicity of movement.

Here is my list of favorites for this month. Click on the links to read more about them.

    1) Nodee, Majorstua - apparently, everybody’s favorites… And it is great, so just get in line!!
    2) Nippon Art, Sentrum - it just feels more genuine than Alex
    3) Alex Sushi, Solli plass - it is great. But still shi shi and expensive.
    4) Sushi to Wok, Majorstua - I think it’s the tea
    5) House of Sushi, Skøyen - I guess it was the starter.

    Well. That was my list.
    Now tell me yours!

Happy not so happyHappy Sushi has a crappy location, and I am sorry to say that their food was not much better. They say that their prices makes you happy, but I don’t rate sushi first on price and then on quality of food. That will probably just make you sick.

This is an old coffee place turned sushi bar, but not with any grace or genuine feelings for the tradition of making sushi.

I was told this place was called Sushi and Baguette or something, but they must have changed the name because now it is called Mitsu Kafé. (I saw that there was some changes in prices from April on (2007), so maybe they changed owner?) The menu still have sushi AND baguettes for those that were worried about the change :). They also serve other types of Asian food.

It is really a dump. Lookswise. The service too was a bit not existing, you felt a bit uncomfortable just coming in, but their food was quite good. It really reminded me more of a hamburger bar than a sushi place.

Sushi Tokyo - Majorstua, OsloSushi Tokyo is a good stop on the way to or from the most beautiful park in Oslo; Vigelands-/Frognerparken.

The restaurant does not have a very cosy or romantic interior, but they have an ok sushi bar. Unfortunately you can’t sit at it. They also serve other Asian food, but seems to have sushi as their main focus.
