I found it! Another reason to put my favorite comedian on here (who is the reason for the name of this blog). I went to look if I could find if mr. Izzard actually likes sushi. Well, I still am not sure, but he does part of his routine talking about it, which is reason enough for me. Here is a transcript from “Sexie”:
“- But the whole thing I was talking about, the whole superhero thing, the reason is fear. I, I, I try to push fear back, you know as a transvestite, I try to push fear back sure enough, because you know I had fight, you know people give me shit in the streets.
They go “Hey what’s the fuckin___ And all” And I’ve learned martial arts, since I had a big fight about five years ago, I’m now a black belt in SASHIMI. Um which if you know sushi, it is like that but its sashimi, just raw fish.”

Genmaicha (玄米茶, “brown rice tea”) is the Japanese name for green tea combined with roasted brown rice.
It is sometimes referred to as “popcorn tea” because a few grains of the rice pop during the roasting process and resemble and taste like popcorn! This type of tea was originally drunk by poor Japanese, as the rice served as a filler and reduced the price of the tea; today it is drunk by all segments of society and is my favourite kind of japanese tea. Its flavor is mild and agreeable and combines the fresh grassy flavor of green tea with the nutty flavor of the rice. (Source: Wikipedia)

Kitty’s Sushi is a very nice sushi place. It is reasonably cheap and have an extensive menu. The service is sometimes a bit snappy, but most of the time we get along fine. I like that it is central in Grünerløkka, and the prices are ok. I wish they had a bit more japanese style flatware and presentation skills.
Noel from RAW and Okane in Spokane shows you how to make a spicy tuna roll.
Mmmm. Gonna go and make myself some rolls now.
A good instruction video on how to make yourself handrolls.
Think I have to have a hand roll sushi party. Very soon!
An educating video about how you behave in a sushi ya…
Funny!

Fuji at Skillebekk was a place I had not heard much about. It seemed like a happening place in the neighborhood, and was quite crowded when we were there. The restaurant lies in quite a nice area and it has a sushi bar where you can sit and watch them at work. Fuji is run by Chinese, and the experience was lacking the typical japanese touch and sophistication.
We ordered the yellow tale, eel and butterfish nigiri sushi, and of course tempura maki, soft shell crab maki in addition to the spicy tuna maki and the Fuji special maki. The chef surprised us by giving us some salmon sashimi with spring onion and a mountain of gari for starters. A good start.
I have to say - beware of the wasabi peas, or they will take over your life…. (add scary movie voice to statement and you will realize it is true. Really!)
Well, I have had this addiction for several weeks now, and it does not seem to go away. The green little ones are a necessity to have at least one full box of at all times. And since I go through them as fast as I do, I always need to get several. Boxes… Luckily I have found them in my next door market, so my wasabi fix is near.
Another actor who likes sushi. Vince Vaughn. Ex-boyfriend of Jennifer Aniston, right? And he went to one of the places I actually went to in Studio City - Katsu-ya (not a favorite btw).
Vaughn was spotted drowning out his romance woes at a venerable Japanese eating establishment on Ventura Boulevard, asking, between greedy chugs of sake and bites of unagi hand roll, why it’s so hard to find the love a good woman…
So - he likes his unagi, huh?
The sushi rice is key in making good sushi. There are a lot of ways to make it, and most of them will end up pretty much the same. It does not really require that much, just a bit of patience when waiting for it to dry, boil, sit… Just do other things while waiting.
Pickled ginger is called gari in Japanese. Gari is always served with your sushi, and it is yummy, refreshing and cleans out your mouth between the pieces. You should try to eat pieces of pickled ginger between different kinds of sushi to enhance the flavors.
Gari is sold in most supermarkets around, and come in glass jars or big and small plastic bags. I prefer the ones in plastic bags that you get at japanese supermarkets, but you really also should try and make it yourself. It is not very hard, and here is one recipe to start out with.
Ingredients
- 2 large ginger roots
- 1 cup rice wine vinegar
- 6 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp sake
- 1 tbsp mirin
- 1 tsp salt
Peel, cut and grate your ginger. Bring a saucepan with water to a boil, and boil your pieces of ginger for a minute or two. Remove it from the saucepan to cool.
Combine your other ingredients and bring to boil.
Meanwhile while doing this, you slice your ginger as thinly as possible.
Put your thin slices of ginger in a glass jar of some sort with a tight lid on it. The liquid from the other ingredients are then poured over the ginger slices.
Let it cool and allow the ginger to pickle away in your refrigerator for a few days.
For addicts: It is important to have a quality assurance tasting whenever you need to… I go by my ginger every other day… Well. It’s healthy!
Your gari should last a month if refrigerated.
Sushi&Wok at Aker Brygge used to be called East Sushi and Noodles I believe. I have been at their other restaurant at Majorstua several times which I quite like, and had high hopes for dinner. Especially their tempura maki and their brown rice tea is usually quite a treat. This restaurant even has a sushi bar about four people can sit at. Will have to try that next time.
We ordered both a sushi menu, and a sushi combo meal. The combo had my necessary tempura maki, and the combo had tuna, salmon, shrimp, halibut and red clam.
