March 3rd is a traditional celebration day of girls called “Hina-matsuri in Japan.” The color of pink symbolizes the day and in department stores, everything turns pink and you can find colorful dolls for sale.
Here are some dolls that I found on PingMag, which is meant to be the emperor and empress having a relaxed sushi! Very elaborate as fits an Emperor! Imagine having these as a kid. Ooooh.

Cookingcute.com is a website run by a vietnamese girl called Ngoc, who (up until february at least) spent a lot of time cooking fantastic bento boxes. She teaches us that the secret to packing bento every day “without driving yourself batty from lack of sleep (or chronically showing up to work late) is good planning. - I can’t say that I always plan well, but when I do, I can whip up a tasty bento in about 30 minutes. Sure, it takes longer than packing a sandwich and chips, but overall it’s healthier, less expensive than eating out, and a cute bento can really brighten your (or a loved one’s) day.” Here are some of her creations:

In sushi restaurant your chopsticks usually is lying on a small rest, a hashi-oki. These are usually made of ceramic or wood and very often cutely designed. My favorite is my blue blowfish. The reason for it is that when you need to place your chopsticks back on the table, you don’t want the chopstick-tip to be in contact with the ‘dirty’ table.
But if you’re in an sushi bar and they don’t offer you a choopstick rest, don’t despair. You can make your own! On Flickr I found this guy showing us how to fold a disposable chopstick sleeve into a makeshift chopstick rest.

I like the attitude that you get in sushi bars sometimes. This photograph is illustrating it quite well. There is a fine balance of what they can say and do for you to respect them, and what they can’t say and do for people to not want to go there. I have seen this in a lot of these local, proper Japanese places. They seems to be shopping customers, just as much as we are shopping for sushi. It is in their right to be demanding. Or as the photographer says: “You want Sushi? Follow the rules.”

It’s been a while since I found some silly sushi other than rice with fish stuff now. I just love the colors in these sushi soaps. They even come with kamaboko and wasabi soap. They are scent free, are naturally moisturizing so they won’t dry your skin out and, and no animal testing is involved.

In this game too you prepare sushi and feed four sushi hungry girls. Every girl want’s a certain kind sushi. You need to take all the ingredients, put them together and drag the sushi to the plate of the girl who asked for it. You loose if they don’t get their food in time.

Ken Kawasumi has pioneered the culinary art of transforming the simple sushi roll (maki-zushi) into an intricately designed masterpiece. He is famous for his kazari maki-zushi.
Since beginning a sushi apprenticeship at the age of 16, Kawasumi has spent 33 years perfecting his sushi crafting techniques. After working at a number of well-known sushi bars in the Tokyo precinct, he opened the popular sushi restaurant Kawasumi.

An incredibly inventive and creative chef is Mr. Homaro Cantu. He is, among a million other things it sounds like, making sushi in his own very special way!
His maki may look a lot like the sushi rolls - pristine, coin-size disks stuffed with lumps of fresh crab and rice and wrapped in shiny nori and taste like sushi, deliciously fishy and seaweedy. But they are not sushi like we know it.
This is just stupid. Just putting wasabi and eye in the same sentence makes my stomach turn. I was not sure wether to have it on here at all, but I expect more from my sushi loving readers. They are smart. We would not do this, now would we? Ouuuuch…..
These pictures I found on Flickr were taken during something called they called “Freestyle sushi master competition”, on December 6th 2005. It looks fun! I think I will have to hold a local version of this in Oslo very soon! Who would want to participate? ![]()
