Instructables has a great post on the do’s and don’ts when you make bento boxes. It is very nicely written with illustrations and images. This “instructable” (their name for a tutorial) attempts to provide the basic design principles, resources for obtaining the necessary tools, and some of the traditional rules of making a beautiful and delicious bento box. I was both inspired and learned a lot from this tutorial.

Another picture I found on Flickr! It looks like this Christmas tree is made of these fantastic plastic food display items they use in Japan. Beautiful! Here are some full sized photos of it:

“Download” a dinnerware set for one, is a suppose to be a comment on technology and our lives. The artist Yosoh says;
“I once saw a 1960’s science program that proclaimed computers would simplify our lives bringing a 4 day work week. I can only speak for myself, computers have had the opposite affect. Most of my meals are spent in front of the computer. The pace of our lives seems to be spinning out of control. “Download” is dedicated to the individuals whose dining companions are often their computers.

The movie “THE TEN” from David Wain I really want to see! I watched the trailer a several times now, but I still can’t figure out what it is about! I laughed all the time, though… This scene includes Rob Corddry from The Daily Show in jail dreaming about having sushi… Imagine being locked up and never being able to have it ever again!? No. Can’t do it. I guess that rules out becoming a criminal…

Merry Xmas everyone!!
This first year of blogging about sushi has been fun and I have gotten to know a lot of really nice people. Some of the best sushi blogs out there you too should visit are Warrens - Sushi Otaku, Allisons Sushi Day and Trevors The Scrawling Claw. I always hang out at their places to get inspired!
Having the goal of eating myself through the sushi scene in Oslo means that I have eaten a LOT of sushi this year! I am up to 35 restaurants covered, but many still to go. I have lost track on how many there are in total and I feel like they keep on popping up so quickly… And not just quality sushi bars I am afraid…
But there are some good ones out there too! Nodee, Alex Sushi, Nippon Art and Cosmo Thai & Sushi are now on my top 3 list of “sit down restaurants”, while Sushi House in Sporveisgata, Sushi & Wok in Majorstua and Kitty’s Sushi are my top 3 favorite “take away places”.

With 16 people in our apartment, we felt a bit crowded - but in a good way. When you just sit down and get served food in your own kitchen it’s kind of weird, but in the skilled hands of Arne Austbø from Taku Catering, we were so taken care of. It was a wonderful evening and a sushi experience out of the ordinary!
Mr. Austbø is kind of a novelty in the Oslo restaurant scene. You know this when he comes with his own photographer from the most prestigious financial newspaper in Norway following him around. We’re trendsetters… Really!! Taku Catering is just this one guy who comes to your house and cooks fantastic sushi for you. Here is how an evening like that can look like.

Having a sushi party? Check out this cool toy that came out this summer from toymaker Bandai Namco. It’s an automatic sushi roller–just put seaweed, rice, and your ingredients of choice in the little orange machine, turn the rollers, and voila! You have perfect, tightly rolled whatever-makis in a matter of seconds. The roller is meant to be a toy for 6-12 years old girls, but I guess it serves no harm for people who are looking for a fast sushi snack.

A lot of sushi bars have a neon signs to signalize to us desperate night wanderers where we can get our fill. I have tried to understand how to evaluate the quality of sushi from the sign outside, but I think that I need some more experience from more sushi populated areas like the US or Japan.

Cosmo Thai and Sushi has been around for about a year, but it was only recently that I heard about this place. Weird really, considering their food and also quite stylish interior and restaurant look-and-feel. To cut it short - I really liked this place!
They are located just on the opposite corner from one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Oslo - Yaya’s in Aker Brygge.

Now that Christmas is coming, I am trying to get in the mood… I found this very pretty Christmas Sushi, that was created by a Japanese girl that calls herself Ochikeron. She made this for a Japanese cooking contest called the “Sea Food Cooking Contest” back in 2006. Her blog is a collection of writings about her creative cooking and award-winning recipes created for food companies and recipe competitions in Japan.
This beautiful creation was made with minced tuna on top of sushi rice, coated with avocado paste and then topped with mayonnaise, scallion, and salmon roe for decoration. The star is made of cheese!

Kate Winslet and Jack Black were having sushi in this clip from the movie The Holiday. Can’t really see what they are eating, though. Some rolls. But I also learned a new concept from this clip; boob grace. Accidental boob grace. ![]()
We had the need for a late night snack and were really aiming for the kebab place just around the corner from this restaurant. I had never noticed this tiny sushi take away place before. They opened in the winter of 2007, so not been around too long. Another sushi restaurant opened just around the corner in oktober, so they are getting competition. According to the woman behind the counter the neighbors prefer their food to the new one. Maybe competition is a good thing. At least they have to work hard to always be better than the other place…

I love dogs. But I don’t have one. If I did - these would be my choice for a Christmas gift for it this year. “These adorable sushi-shaped dog toys are inspired by love for our pups and yummy sushi!” I think that if I was a dog, I would appreciate them for their colors and drool over them for what they are - chew toys.
