Sushi Gen just a couple of days ago, and now this!? Ahh. I feel so lucky. Asanebo has a reputation for being sort of a hidden gem. I read in another review that the owner has been trained by the more famous Matsuhisa - so I was eager to see what this strip mall restaurant was all about, and wow - were we blown away!
This is more a fusion sushi bar, and maybe not for the purist sushi people out there, but definitely down my alley! I felt like the sushi chefs were loving their work, were treating their customers with respect and interest, preparing everything down to the details and yeah, in general just dish by dish - blowing us away!
We made it up to them to serve us, and did not regret that. It might make your bill a bit high, but we thought it was so worth it. First we got a plate of beautifully prepared red snapper with citrus pepper, and you could already see that these guys knew what they were doing. Tuna tartar with pine nuts, onion and lemon, a slightly seared version of the red snapper together with some typical Japanese vegetables, halibut with truffle, sea urchin with lemon and wasabi and wrapped in a small piece of nori, sautéed scallop with lemon, wasabi and sea salt… Doesn’t it just sound and look fantastic!?
They do only a few rolls, and we had him make us an avocado and eels roll, that was very good. We also had some delicious nigiri sushi with yellowtail, tuna and squid. In the end we ordered their sesame seed and brown tea ice cream for dessert and smiled all the way home! A pretty close to perfect meal!
Summary:
Perfect sushi experience! They make you feel like home here. And they make beautiful food. And it tastes fantastic! All smiles!
