Hatsune - Chaoyang Northeast, BeijingSOD has been out travelling. Not primarily to try out sushi all over, but that is a positive side-effect. This time - Beijing.

I have had sushi in several countries, and they all seems to be having their own twist to it, which is nice and quaint. In Beijing we had sushi at Hatsune, a restaurant that year after year wins awards for having Beijing’s best sushi. The owner is a Chinese-American from California and he serves an innovative fusion sort of California-meets-Japan menu. According to other reviewers “the locals love it, expats crowd the place and the food is good.”

Their menu did not scare us off. It consisted of pretty much the same elements that we are getting used to - lots of sashimi and nigiri choices and a long list of makis.

Our guide and driver accompanied us at the restaurant, making sure the staff understood our order and that we got enough food for all. The sashimi platter was very good, the fish was very fresh and delicious. This was the case also for our nigiri pieces too. I think what is most interesting to see is that the sushi palette is different than in the other countries I have had sushi. An example is the way they make the sushi rice a lot more saltier than I am used to. Actually too salty in my opinion.

Keep it simple is sometimes a good rule of thumb when choosing rolls, but at the same time I am easily swayed by what sounds great. We ended up with a lot of rolls that sounded good, but when had was just too over the top and we could not even finish them all. They all kind of tasted the same, which is the disadvantage of putting a lot of the same ingredients in all of your rolls. In regards to rolls, so I did not like this place at all.

Summary:

We had a nice meal, and even though I found the sushi rice too salty, the sashimi was very good!
