House of Sushi - Oslo, MajorstuaI had heard of House of Sushi several times, but never found it. It was kind of hidden in a back street of Majorstua, Ole Vigsgate 15. The building itself was not very inviting, and when entering the shop – unfortunately were not the people working there either. We might have been unlucky with our timing or something, in that the chef just then were on a break, but it was still a weird feeling of being told that you had to wait for your food for at least thirty to fourty minutes while the guy who is supposed to make it is sitting eating right next to you. Well, it made us hungrier I guess.

I am not at a level where I can look at a sushi bar and tell whether or not they keep their fish correctly or if the fish is up to standard. They did have a lot of salmon, but this particular Saturday they did not have tuna at all unfortunately. I hear it is hard to get a hold of good tuna these days.

So much of sushi has to do with presentation, dish ware is of importance and smells and cleanliness are things that to me are key in the whole sushi experience. In this place I was not impressed with either. like japanese green tea with my sushi. We got a huge coffee glass of tea, so warm you could not hold the cup. I prefer where you get a pot of tea with small ceramic cups – it just feels more proper.

We were finally were handed (!) our food. We had ordered the 12 piece sashimi (129 NOK(spicy salmon (89NOK), tempura (95 NOK) and soft shell crab maki (99NOK).

Summary:

Generally sloppy handywork, only ok tasting food, quite bad service. But obviously they have their followers, maybe we just came on a bad day. Everyone has that once in a while. I guess I will have to try them again. Maybe the one in Skøyen next time.
