Japo Sushi looks like a tiny place from the outside. But it has some style. I actually was surprised by how much bigger it felt when we came inside, using four gigantic mirrors on each side giving the room an imaginary depth and space.
We got lucky and came in front of a huge line of take away orders. I guess friday nights are busy, which our next table guests got to feel in particular. They got their food, but never their drinks, so they ended up leaving before even touching their sushi. Quite upset it seemed like. Hmm.
It was that kind of experience. I liked their sushi, but their service was not good at all. It is a small place and they should manage to keep the few tables they have happy in addition to take away orders.
We ordered a sashimi platter together with some rolls and nigiri sushi. The presentation kind of mirrored the cramp location, so not impressed there. But their fish was fresh and smooth, the eel good and the salmon maki, tempura maki and soft shell crab was yummy. So, despite not that impressive service - we kind of liked this place. It was ok.

How did you like Japo Sushi - Frogner, Oslo?

Terribly bad service.
Most of the staff is OK, but some are so rude - people get the rudest treatment I have ever observed in any restaurants.
They are clumsy with orders, sometimes you wait a long time, and the rice is either too cold or too warm. When you get your food, you might not get the right order, but if you try to complain, the staff will tell you to “shut up” instead of admitting the mistake and saying they are sorry and will correct it.
Bad sushi, fish is not fresh
I live abroad, and Japo sushi is the one place I have to go every time I stop by Oslo. I find the staff excellent! From the second time I was there, they remember me by every visit, they are friendly and have good sense of humour. Better yet, they facilitate my special wishes and all in all, I think the fish is usually fresh (it’s also possible not to order what looks like 2nd generation, you know) and the hygiene strikes me as better than in many other sushi places. Prices are good. Avoid dining in Friday evenings, unless you feel like having your cosy dinner in the middle of the takeaway cue. That’s the downside of a popular place, I guess.
Staff is acting immaturely and is unorganized. Popular because people @ Frogner don’t have any money left after paying rent.
The fish was not fresh.
I’m not coming back!
Janne: what sense of humor are you talking about? The staff talk to you using street slang, like you are a member of some gang, or something, and on top of that they are immature, can’t sort out their orders, and can’t take being criticised!
Definately the rudest staff in all of Oslo.
Plus, the sushi isn’t well made ! They are not japanese, and they do i too quickly, following no rules whatsoever. It’s too hot, or it has fat slintrer that is not supposed to be there. Or too much spice to cover up the fish from yesterday. It’s a no-go!
I’m sorry to conclude that Norwegian people know absolutely nothing about food, are extremely naive, and believe the best even when they are presented with absolute shit. Almost as bad as Americans in their naive taste for shitty food !!
And they can’t tell the difference between japanese and other asian nationalities.
Korea and Japan have traditions for sushi. The others do not. I’ve never seen anyone who hasn’t worked many years for Japanese people or who are japanese or korean themselves make good sushi. It simply doesn’t work!!
What do you mean, not order the “spicy” (old) maki rolls?
If a restaurant serves anything old at all, you shouldn’t go there !!
Wow - someone really ticked someone off here… Japo Sushi is really getting hammered. Well - then they might deserve it.
@Geir, @Janne, @Trude and @Jens - thanks for sharing your experiences. Hopefully you will share your good experiences too!
I’ll share my good experiences, but not with this restaurant. There aren’t any. You’re better off going to Alex or House of Sushi in the same area, or make your way somewhere else.
It really seems like these cheapo fake vietnamese sushi-places popping up all over town aren’t very serious. People should know better, I get both very irritated and think it’s very funny that some people writing in Norwegian countryside dialects on certain pages say there are lots of “japanese” people in the kitchen. How can they be so damn stupid ?
It’s sad to see such lack of restraint and perspective. Japo Sushi started as a Take away place, that has gradually expanded over a few years. It is very popular, and the sushi they serve is better than sushi I’ve tried in many other “real” sushi restaurants across many continents (including Japan).
If one looks at he rating it gets, it is clearly not as bad as our friend Geir claims.
Perspective?
You obviously know nothing about food or service
Like Hellstrøm said on TV, sushi is “150% hygiene”. Japo is so rude, so unprofessional, so disgusting, it simply stands out as the worst sushi place in Oslo.
A friend of mine ordered “Tom Yam Kung” (thai soup in a japanese restaurant)
He had to send the soup back to the kitchen. What they claimed to be Tom Yam Kung wasn’t Tom Yam Kung !!
Still (summer 2009) they are not able to get orders right, and are not very professional
The sushi still has pieces of fat (fett-trevler) and is too hot or cold, not well made, sometimes you can see its quickly made. Bad fish on certain days and in the maki rolls. Avoid this place
The government restaurant inspection should have closed this nasty and unhygienic place already. Last time it got evaluated it was “less than satisfactory”
