In Sacramento, I hear that the Mikuni restaurants have become somewhat famous - also outside of the typical sushi fans community. This might lead to that a lot more people get exposed to it. Great!
But eating sushi is about so much more than just eating food. It is about having a memorable experience, both visually and taste wise. Here - you have a menu longer than some books and the food come served as in a regular fast food place; in huge amounts and drowned in different sorts of dressing.
In my opinion - this place just overdoes everything. The menu takes you forever to even look through and what feels like lots of options, actually just gets stressful when the waiter comes around. I wish we had sat at the sushi bar, then we could ask the chef for his recommendations and it would also have given us more insight into how well they actually do sushi.
We had a sashimi platter for starters, which was a promising beginning. They have an enormous amount of sushi rolls, so we wanted to try some of them. We ordered tekka maki, a soft shell crab roll, a train wreck roll (shrimp tempura, spicy avo blend, crab mix topped with chopped unagi, sea steak, sesame seeds, onion, spicy zing zag sauce and unagi sauce) (I know - I shouldn’t have ordered that…) and a sacramento roll (deep fried california roll).
When it comes to the food, it was not so much as it did not taste good. The fish was actually quite good. It was more that after you had finished eating, it made you feel like you had eaten at a hamburger joint - a “greasy thousand island dressing feeling” while leaving the restaurant… Not the experience that I want out of my sushi visits.
Summary:
American style sushi. Way too much mixing of flavors, sauces and grease for my taste. Not a favorite.

As usual, the food was very good - best Restaurant in town. I would like a copy of the menu to send to a friend in Ohio.
As usual, the food was excellent and could not have been better. The menu is extensive and includes just about everything a person could want. Mikuni’s is the best restaurant in Sacramento. June
