Nama Sushi & Noodles - Bryggene, BergenNama is a very nice sushi place located close to the old part of the harbor front of Bergen. Their restaurant is modern and clean, and it seems to be quite popular. The sound level in the restaurant was a bit loud though and it was hard to hear each other talk when the place got full.

But we were there to eat, not to talk. Right? :)

We ordered lots of different things off their menu. Mostly maki, but also some nigiri sushi.

Their salmon and cream cheese maki was something I had not had before, and it was quite a treat. It was a bit too rich to have a lot of, but a couple of bites of that was wonderful. They also served good unagi and beef nigiri sushi. Their soft shell crab and tempura maki was also really good. We kept on ordering more. All in all this was a nice place, but the presentation and the overall impression could get better.

Nama never disappoints us, but has a strong competitor in Red Sun situated just a block away!

Nama serves good sushi, however the presentation could be much better and the restaurant should improve the interior a “bit” - now it looks like a school canteen, and the price is too high for a canteen hehe… A comfortable place is as important as the food in this price level.

    Cheers!

Nama is worth a visit just because of the “Hot Philadelfia” - yummi :-) Salmon and spring onion maki wth a slice of grilled cream cheese (Philadelfia) on top…. Try it!! Unbelievable good :-)

I normally really like this place, and I’ve been there several times in the last year. But the last two times I have been there the service has just been FAR TOO SLOW. Last time we waited 40 minutes for a plate of Sushi moriawase, when the place was not even very busy. When the food finally arrived it was by no means as good as it has been, the fish didn’t taste as nice (it was still a bit frozen) and my stomach was a bit strange when we were done. Considering the high price I will give this place a miss for while.

Review text: Trendy looking, but in a somewhat often done minimalisitic way is my first impression when entering the door. The chefs are standing ready behind the sushicounter being photographed by american tourists. I don’t get to look to closely at the fish being displayed as we are led to our table, but it all looks clean. Big kudos for the chairs which are very comfortable.

So it’s menu time. Pretty standard stuff for a semi-upscale restaurant. A few different sashimi plates, some combos, nigiri and assortments of rolls. The maki selection included salmon with springonion, spicy tuna, california, philidelphia, softshell crab and the ever present shrimp-tempura roll. Nothing wild. Some small rolls, some larger and also inside-out. Good selection of nigiri included yellowtail, whale, eel and kingkrab. There were also a few gunkan-maki to choose from. The most interesting probably salmon-roe with quail egg. What makes me scratch my head is why a place like this don’t have mackrel on the menu in the middle of the season.

I ordered the sushi & sashimi mix with 6 pices of maki, 6 nigiri and with at least 14 pieces of sashimi. Not bad for a price of 260 something kroner. Although it must be said that the sashimi pieces were quite smalll (mental note: 2 pices of yellowtail nigiri was priced at 108). The plate looked good and I give a thumbs up for the seaweed garnish serving as a backdrop for the sashimi. I know it’s bought packaged ready-to-use with seasameseed and all, but still tastes good and is original compared to most places.

I ate my sashimi first, a mix of salmon, tuna, scallops, sweet shrimps and halibut. Also there was 3 cuts I presume was supposed to be toro, but fatty content was close to nil. The yellowtail tuna tasted better. Salmon and halibut was good, but sweet shrimps a bit dry. The scallops were good too, but I wish for a place where they would serve fresh ones and not frozen. It’s of course a price issue, but the texture and taste are miles apart so I would gladly pay extra for some fresh firm sweet tasting scallops.

On to nigiri: no surprises here in chefs choice of fish. Surf clam was good and so was the tuna. The salmon cut must have been from the back of the tail cause it was a bit chewy and the shrimp was overcooked and a bit dry. So much about the topping. What disappointed me about this place was the rice. It was overcooked and probably therefore also pressed too hard together. I assume that was a mistake, but should anyway not be served. Too make things worse the rice was way too sweet.

As maki I got shrimp tempura roll. Dont’ like deep fried sushi very much so have to remember next time to ask waiter to have something raw in my maki.

Had a whale sashimi to end the meal and was pleasantly surprised.

All things considered an average place. No high ambitions, but nothing to be ashamed of.
