Sumo has a great location in Bergen city center. It looks great both from the outside and gives a real authentic, japanese feel inside - and it was fun to be able to sit “in the floor” on pillows similar to what you do in Japan. I was really positively surprised by the look and feel of this place.
The menu too was quite extensive, so I was all smiles there for a while. But then came the food. It was not that it was that bad. It was ok, but I had just built up such really high expectations…
My precious tempura maki was soggy. The soft shell crab was cruchy and quite ok, but in general the rice was a mushy and since the place was so great in so many ways, the fact that the presentation was not inspired at all, made the fall so much higher and Sumo into just another mediocre place. I probably should give them a second chance - but from my first impression it was not good enough.
Summary:
Ok place, but could easily be soooo much better. Has such potential. Did not deliver.

I´ve been to Sumo three times, and I have had the same experiences you had. The first time I went there the sushi was amazing, with nice presentation. The two other times it was like, meh, not all bad, but not great either. Next time I´ll try Red Sun, I think.
