About two weeks ago, Eugene Ciurana - the expert behind one of the most popular sushi websites online “Sushi eating HOWTO” - came to Norway for a conference. This is the third time we have tried to meet up (I am a very busy person…) and we finally made it! According to his website Eugene became fascinated with sushi after his first dining experience in 1988, when he was around 21. He’s developed a taste for all things sushi since then, and goes out of his way to sample new dishes wherever he can find them. He then tries to enrich his HOWTO with those experiences.
It was so nice to finally get together, and I got to meet a lot of his geeky developer friends too.
We of course went to have sushi, and I got to taste the very politically incorrect whale sushi for the first time especially ordered by Eugene at Alex Sushi.
You really should check out his “Sushi eating HOWTO”. It is the most comprehensive sushi guide online and has great photos too (and is the longest web page ever…? :))
Eugene, until next year…

You seem to have really enjoyed the meeting with Eugene.
Good for you.
So how about the whale? I’ve got to hear the impression about it from you.
Did you like it?
Japanese has a long history of eating whales for more than 2000 years.
I imagine that Norway should have a similar kind of tradition like Japan, too.
When I grew up in ’70s and ’80s in Japan, the price of whale meat probably was at the stage of getting higher gradually because of the politics and the pressures from outside, if my speculation is correct.
I was fortunate to eat whale sashimi numerous times when I was young.
Eat with grated garlic and soy sauce. A unique taste, like something between akami (tuna) and (raw) beef. I likeed it a lot and I miss it now.
Whales are in trouble and should NOT be fished.
