Sushi Express won “Best in test” on take out sushi that was held between some of the take out sushi bars around town, so I was quite excited when I woke up this morning, thinking - ah, I have a sushi quest today! I will have some good sushi! Well.
This is another of the typical take away places that serves both Vietnamese and Sushi… They have a couple of tables and a window seat, but you don’t really feel like sitting there for more than just getting this lunch over with. The look and feel of the restaurant is like all other non-Japanese Asian looking fast food joints; lacking the sense of detail that makes being there an special experience.
I was in the mood for maki - so I ordered a kappa maki, a salmon maki and a tempura maki. After taking the sushi class, where they teach you that one of the signs of a good sushi chef is how good their kappa maki is, I have started really appreciating a good and cruncy kappa maki. Well, here they make kappa maki as an inside out roll and with avocado! That’s not right, is it? The kappa maki has it’s name from a Japanese myth where Kappa is a monster that is fond of cucumber… Not avocado. If you have to put avocado in a suppose-to-be-thin-roll, give it a name from a monster that liked avocados at least…
The salmon roll was good, though. Their fish seemed fresh and it had the right consistency and yeah - I was quite happy with that. The tempura maki was a bit sad. Not crunchy, tasty or inspiring in any way. I think that was my biggest issue with the food. It just all tasted too similar. It looked similar, no presentation was involved and yeah - it was just soulless lunch food.
But sometimes, that’s what you’re looking for. Right? I would rather go a couple of blocks up and enjoy a wonderful lunch at Sushi House then.
Summary:
Another mediocre place where I can get lunch and get full but never
