Downtown LA in Little Tokyo/Japan Town you find a Japanese supermarket called Marukai. We went there to go shopping, but stopped by their sushi ya on the third floor for some lunch. It supposedly is one of the best in town, and they have received a lot of sushi awards (Winner - 2005 Sushi Pioneer Award, Best sushi - 2005 Best of Citysearch, Best sushi - 2006 Downtown news) according to their business card. We sat down in the bar and let the chef treat us with what he thought would suit us.
We told him that we wanted some nigiri sushi and that he should come up with a maki he thought we would like. I am not yet familiar with ordering directly from the sushi master, so I thought it was a bit scare. It turned out to be quite a treat.
We had some great eel, yellow tale, fatty tuna and spanish mackerel nigiri sushi. I have a hard time getting used to the size of american sushi yet though. They are a bit too over sized for me. The maki was more the size I was used too. He did not even have a name on the maki roll we got, which had tempura shrimp and some tuna tartar on top. Yummy!
Summary:
I liked this place! You get the genuine feel of a proper sushi ya here. An everyday place, but with real sushi chefs.
