Sushi House in Sporveisgata has become one of my favorites in Oslo. This is their second sushi bar, but I have no idea what they share other than the name. It was not Sushi House quality!
Since I heard that they had opened a second sushi bar, I was eager to try that one out as well. Similar to the original one in Sporveisgata, this one too is just a small hole in the wall. The building they reside in is being redecorated, so right now (August 2007) it is quite a sad looking place with no view whatsoever, with weeks old newspapers and dirty windows. Hmm. Not promising. The girls behind the bar were young and did not come with of years of sushi chef experience… We were very skeptical.
But. We had travelled there and were hungry, so we ordered their usually so delicious Sushi House platter and an extra soft shell crab maki. That is normally enough for the two of us. I forgot to tell them to leave out the tuna - which I am boycotting. I know - an important point in taking such a stand would then be to actually tell the sushi bars you visit that that’s what you are doing and why and that they should not serve Bluefin tuna… but so much for the activist me obviously… Well, next time. At least I did not eat it.
As for the food. It was as expected. I think I can say that I did not like any of it. Not even the soft shell crab. The salmon was ok, but salmon in Norway is usually better than ok. The butterfish we could not finish. And since we left the tuna as well, it was not much of a meal. The food was just in general not good. It smelled a bit, it was uninspired and just mediocre. No, this was just not the Sushi House we love so much!
Summary:
If you can, go to the one in Sporveisgata. Miles apart in regards to quality. A real let down.

How did you like Sushi House - Sagene, Oslo?

I strongly doubt they would have any bluefin tuna to sell you at Sushi House anyway. Close to all sushi places in Oslo use yellowfin tuna. The meat is leaner and often has a bit firmer texture. It also rarely have the reddiness of the bluefin tuna. Don’t know if you point is valid for yellowfin tuna also though.
If you go to places like Alex or Nodee you may be served bluefin tuna or at least the toro part which you don’t really get with yellowfin tuna. Not sure about Nippon Art, they may serve bluefin as well.
I think you are right about that it might not have been a bluefin tuna, and that most sushi bars in Oslo don’t really serve that. Not skilled enough to know which is which yet… *embarrassed…* According to several websites - the yellowfin is used as a popular replacement for bluefin tuna because of the their low conservation threat level. I just have to make sure not to order toro (*sigh*) when going to Alex, Nodee or Nippon Art then.
