Sushi Popper 04Apr09

Sushi Popper

Sushi on a stick!?? Sort of popsickle sushi? Now, I did NOT expect that… This “amazing” product was announced on April 1st, so I did think it was a joke at first. But it doesn’t seem to be the case… Here is from their sales pitch;

“Delicious sushi is too good to be tied to a table and chopsticks. We’ve created a convenient way to enjoy sushi on the go. Sushi Popper is ready-to-eat sushi in a package that you will soon find in refrigerators in your local stores. Once you crack open the seal on the package, you can use the attached stick to push up the sushi roll from the bottom and bite off the presliced pieces of sushi from the top.

From the press release - “Sushi Popper is the world’s most popular sushi on a stick, and we’ve completely designed it to make it even easier to travel with. The all-new Sushi Popper gives fans more of what they love in their sushi–easy storage, freshness for up to 4 days in the package, and an incredible Package to allow easy eat on the run design.”

I get a buzzword bingo here, they are using so many superlatives that I get suspicious. And using “freshness for up to 4 days” as a sales pitch towards sushi lovers… Hm. Sushi Poppers are said also to be made daily and delivered in a sealed refrigerated container to the stores. There will be five different rolls on the menu, but they say they will be steadily adding more varieties depending on local availability of the freshest ingredients. I am kind of eager to know if they will be hooking up with local sushi bars then? Fish shops? Who will be making these? Since they are going to be made locally and daily?

The press release says it will be available in US stores from summer 2009. Please tell us when someone has had one, we must get a review on them! FuckedGaijing pointed out something funny about their “brilliantly colored” packaging:

“Isn’t that katakana on the packaging closer to “sushi pooper” than “sushi popper?”

Sushi Popper or Sushi Pooper… :)

isn’t this just uncut ie old-style maki zushi? at least in japan, especially convenience stores and other “fast food” joints, but also in select places in the states this stuff is norm, although not in a hard tube

Very funny and looks very pop like its name. And almost like one of those April-fool jokes as you mentioned. Looks very fishy.
That being said, however, I have to admit that I’m curious about it. I will check them in this summer at the local supermarkets I go. My rader is on now. (Don’t count on too much. My radar is not as good as a house wife. I’m just a guy.)
As mkia mentioned, in Japanese convenient stores like 7eleven, they sell maki-zushi rapped with clear plastics. Sushi and nori (sea weed) are seperated by another platic sheet not to contact with sushi rice and to keep the freshness/dryness of nori.
“Sushi Popper” could be another type of take-out style maki-zushi if it’s real.
By the way, I googled “Sushi Popper” and found out that the katakana part of the Japanese name was changed (corrected) from “pupper” to “popper” (both sound translations to English). Check the white letters in Japanese of the picture.

Sushi Pooper, Sushi Popper … whatever, the idea is almost as lame as the founder of the company, Lucas Furst. Found an interesting online post by googling “sushi popper” where it discusses his claims to be a medical doctor (claimed in 2005 he received an MD from U Illinois in Chicago in 2002, then in a separate claim, that he became an MD from some Caribbean outfit in 2008…), Hollywood producer, investment banker and certified pilot. http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forums/showpost.php?p=220085&postcount=22

“Buy my sushi! Trust me! I’m a doctor!!!

      err, kinda of. Maybe…”

    8. Someone at FG has put up a post on my Bio. Wanted to clear up any confusion, I did go to medical school was in the carribean for 2 years then did my residency in Chiago Il. I then moved out west. I do work for a production company that i started in LA and do have my pilots license for which I recieved in Florida years before. All of my information is true. The person who posted my information has done so without any authorization by going into paid sites and pulling various pieces of information and putting them together as to confuse people. We have asked him to remove from the posting as to he was inaccuarate in posting the information and taking bits and pieces then putting them my bio. We have started Sushi Popper not to reinvent sushi but to make sushi easier to eat and keep great freshness at the stores. Also used to eat sushi on the Go when busy with work and do not have time to eat. We look forward to serving you and coming up with new ideas for sushi. Again we wont let anyone stepin our way and we are open to all of our bios.

      To “Don’t Like Liars”:
Who cares if Lucas claims to be a doctor, pilot, or a circus clown! What does that have to do with this awesome new product. All I can say is that my 2 year old and 3 year old LOVES Sushi Poppers!!!! This is something I would pack for a school lunch or take for a quick snack and feel good about giving this to my kids! I’m glad there is someone out there who came up with something so cool!
