It's actually hard to explain how bad my experience on Wednesday with Sushi & Thaimat was. Actually, the whole experience was so mediocre that it makes the time I tried refridgerated sushi from ICA (it seemed like a good idea when in a hurry to get to work) seem like a fabulous experience in comparison.

Now, this place came highly recommended by friend who live in the area, and when catching up with them last Wednesday, we decided to buy take away and go sit in the park. The queue for take away was long, and the popularity of the join probably raised my expectations. I order 2x12 piece sushi and a set of spicy tuna maki (8 pieces), for me and a friend.

The positive: The waiting time was as expected, around 20 minutes; the price was very reasonable: 109NOK for a 12 piece sushi menu (maki + nigiri) and 55NOK for the 8 pieces of spicy tuna; finally, the nigiri was nicely made (though the pieces perhaps were a bit long)

The negaitve:
For one thing, they packed my sushi order in a bag with another person's order. Granted it was a friend of mine, but still, they didn't inform us properly about this, nor ask our permission, so we had to spend quite some time talking to the lady to understand the order right. Like, how could she know that I wasn't going to take the sushi home with me.
Then when we unpack the bag after ca 10 min walking, we find out that she's forgotten to put chopsticks in the bag (!). We ended up having to buy plastic cutlery from a restaurant nearby. Now, I'd normally rather eat sushi with my hand than use a fork & knife, but that was impossible becayse the maki rolls weren't properly rolled. They just unrolled when we picked them up, and all the filling fell out! Alas, the sushi was really badly presented. Not only did the maki fall apart, the sushi "chef" also did a horrible job presenting & packing the sushi. My friends 12 pieces were tightly packed into a small box, and my menu + the spicy tuna maki was tightly packed into a barely larger box. Though I'll admitt I'm quite in awe of their ability to pack sushi. If it was out of concern for the enviroment, they did a good job 'cause all the maki was packed in 2 layers (the top layer nicely squashed against the lid), thus there was no need to use an extra box. Finally, let me comment upon the quality of the fish; the tuna (my favorite with regard to sushi) must have been somewhat old. It lacked the nice red colour that it usually had, and didn't "melt" on the tongue. And also, there was nothing spicy about the spicy tuna: "I thought the first piece was spicey, but that must have been because it was lying next to the wasabi" my friend said.

If there's one thing that'll upset me for sure (and likely ruin my day - yes, I know there are worse problems in the world!), it's bad sushi. And I'm not talking about the fish. More like bad craftmanship, mediocre quality fish, and horrible presentation. Now I know you get what you pay for, but I've definately had much better sushi in Oslo for the same price, or even less, than I paid her. My verdict: 4 thumbs down (I had to borrow 2 extra 'cause it was so bad)! Now, enough bitching and I'm in awe if you've bother to read the whole thing! Thank you for your patience :D

This place is very near where I live and I've used it a lot and I have always got good service & food with reasonable prices!

I use it as a take-away place, and indeed it is very modest looking so I think that (takeaway) is what owners also had in mind when setting it up...

Good for take-away for summer "picnic" at St.Hanshaugen park!
