1) Nodee, Majorstua - apparently, everybody’s favorites… And it is great, so just get in line!!
2) Nippon Art, Sentrum - it just feels more genuine than Alex
3) Alex Sushi, Solli plass - it is great. But still shi shi and expensive.
4) Sushi to Wok, Majorstua - I think it’s the tea
5) House of Sushi, Skøyen - I guess it was the starter.
Well. That was my list.

And we even live right around the corner… Thanks for the tip! Will try it out as soon as California is… eh… 0.000001% covered…
Yo. First three are spot on. Not at all too sure about Sushi & Wok though…and the one at Skøyen I haven’t tried…
As we both seem to find Alex too posh, you (and other Norwegians) might enjoy E24’s review of Alex Sushi (1 out of 4 stars…) here: http://e24.no/eksklusiv/matogvin/article1626182.ece

Keep up the good work!
I agree with you having Sushi House on your list! They have become a favorite of mine as well, but this list was made before I had been there much… Kitty Sushi on the other hand I don’t care for.
I so wish I would be surprised by a brand new place soon though. Sigh.
We should go sushi’ing soon! Any suggestions to where?

We have of course been to Sushi House and it is definitely a favorite! This list was made first quarter this year, and back then I hadn’t. Need to make a new list it seems like. You find our review of Sushi House here:

Thanks for the tip, though! Keep looking out for new and good ones and tell us about it!
Good site.
I recently visit Nodee and ordered a Sushi bar menu. I was a bit disappointed with the rice - it was different than other sushi rice I eaten. Can you tell me (or link me) more about how good sushi rice is suppose to be? At Nodee it felt like eating porridge - is it me or the chef that got it wrong?
I haven’t tried nearly enough sushi places in Oslo, but my current favorite is Asia Restaurant @ Torshov (Sandaker Senter).

Great site!
@Espen: Thanks for you comment! Sorry for replying so late - been out traveling. Nodee is a favorite of mine, but I can’t really say I have noticed a big difference in rice lately. Went there last week and was very happy with it. Hm. About how to make good sushi rice - I have a couple of posts on (written / video)it here, SushiDay has a recipe on it too. It is always exciting to make the rice, the whole sushi experience is so dependent on getting the rice just right!
@Lars: Thanks for your tip. I will definitely try it out. Just tried Sun Sushi in Torshov. Just an ok place… Will post a review suddenly.
Alex. Probably the best sushi I’ve ever had anywhere. (I’ve been a lot of places, but not Japan.)
Japosushi (Excellent for take-home; it’s become a once-a-week habit.)
House of Sushi - Skøyen
Nodee (Love it, but usually don’t go just for sushi.)
Kitty’s Sushi
@elical - Thank you for your list! Sounds like we are agree on which sushi bars we like around town. Will recommend Jonoes, though. Have to make a new list now.
Jeg digger sushi deluxe i gamle byen, sushien der er den beste jeg har prøvd.
kokken der trur jeg er begavet. min nr 2 er japo . alex sushi er ikke så veldig god men , for noen stive priser folkens. noodee på 3.
@sushi eater - Been there too, both at Sushi deluxe and Japo Sushi, but it is a while ago. Think I liked Sushi Deluxe better of the two. Maybe I have to go back soon. Thanks for your list though!
I’m sorry, but neither Nippon art nor Fuji are authentic anymore. Both used to be run by japanese people, but Nippon has been taken over by eastern europeans, and Fuji taken over by Thai/chinese. And the results suffer. In Fuji, they put old fish in the maki rolls and are not nearly as good as they were earlier, and in Nippon they gave me average sushi and cold tea, which they heated in a microwave when I asked them to warm it.
The Japanese embassy in Oslo says Alex is the only restaurant that comes close to being acceptable. It is expensive, and it’s also resting on its’ laurels - it got rave reviews and it’s still good, but it feels like nothing new has happened there in years. You are advised to order a la carte pieces and appetizers instead of taking the somewhat disappointing readymade menus. You actually get more value and a more interesting meal.
Although Alex is not run by japanese people, but a Malay, he has many years of experience and is quite professional, having worked under japanese chefs. It is definately the only sushi place in Oslo that can be called acceptabe.
An exotic treat only legal in Norway and Iceland is whale sashimi or sushi, and it can be had in Alex of course.
Most other restaurants are below average and serve the same standard menu, sometimes the pieces are not fresh. But due to the coldness of the water in the Norwegian sea and the access to fish, it usually holds a far higher standard than for example, Paris or other inland European cities where chinese fake restaurants dominate the market.
Norwegian food authorities also require that fish used in sushi be frozen for a certain amount of time to kill bacteria, lowering the general standard of sushi, but perhaps making it a bit healthier. This also applies to Alex.
There are a number of smaller places which should be avoided, go for Alex or Nodee, or House of Sushi.
Japo Sushi is the worst place among the smaller restaurants, and should be avoided like the plague. Naive Norwegian people of course think the informal tone is nice, and they can’t tell the difference between vietnamese and japanese people, so they believe they are in a good restaurant. In reality, this below-average sushi restaurant is run by vietnamese, and they are very messy in taking orders.
On top of that, if they get something wrong, they take nothing to yell bad words at customers who point out their errors. The worst is the arrogant and proud pakistani who serves sushi there, I can’t believe they haven’t fired him yet.
Oh, also in Nippon I witnessed an argument between the eastern european owner and a fish seller about the price of fish. He wanted cheaper fish for the maki rolls. He had this argument in front of everyone.
Also I think it’s a bad thing when they ask if you liked the food, you can’t say no. They should wait for you to tell.
Japo Sushi have personell that are extremely rude to their guests. Do not go there. The proud arrogant person working there takes nothing to yell at people when they ask where their food is after waiting a long time, and does not apologize. I saw him call a guest “asshole” and the manager had to come and apologize, but this proud guy did not. He shouldn’t be in the restaurant-service business. It’s simply unacceptable and I never seen worse service.
Furthermore Norwegian cleanliness authorities ranged them below average, and their sushi is below average.
I have visited alot of sushi places both in Oslo and abroad, i.e London - but I think the sushi in Oslo is quite good if compared to population/popularity. And I think it is important to compare price to quality on the product, cleanliness and welcoming atmosphere. Of course Alex is on the “best of” list - but the price is also astronomously high compared to other cheaper places with only “okey” sushi. So on an everyday basis, one can’t afford going to Alex all the time….
My top list, high-price and compared to price, places:
1. Alex (a little too expensive, but gastronomically delicious - and correct service)
2. Mitsu (lower mid-range, delicious - and friendly)
3. Nodee (so good, so pricy - but nice atmosphere)
4. Asian Sushi Garden (used to be “Asia Restaurant”, cheap and nice close to “Nordpolen”)
5. Sushi Tokyo (cheap, but good compared to what you get)
Other places in which are best for take-away (and budget-friendly):
6. Japo Sushi (yes, so it’s sushi, but overall nice and value for money)
7. Sun Sushi (a little on the small size for less money - side)
8. Kitty’s Sushi (nice sushi on a good day, a little variable, but overall good)
9. Le Meo Sushi (really cheap interiorwise, and non-pricey, prefer to do take-away)
10. Bamboo (small insignificant place, but very good and cheap)
I guess these lists don’t last forever, coz places change owners and gets lazy by good rewievs. But at this time I find the sushi good, and the prices acceptable at the top 10.
However, other places have succeded to do the opposide, which serves poor sushi and gives little value compared to price. Here are, in my opinion, places to avoid:
1. Sushi Nam Kang (pricy compared to quality, poor service)
2. Sushi House (too small pieces for too much money, variable fish)
3. Fuji (out-dated and fish not fresh enough)
4. Sushi & Wok (overpriced, touristy place, poor sushi)
5. Intermezzo Sushi & Noodles (not impressed, sloppy service)
Japo Sushi is useless, the staff is rude and their sushi is awful
The only acceptable places to eat sushi in Oslo in 2009 are Alex, Jonoe and Nodee.
Former stars Nippon Art and Fuji have been taken over by “fake Japanese” (chinese, Thai, eastern europeans) who are in it for the money and not the food. Accordingly the food is also awful - old fish in the “spicy” tuna rolls etc. Shit sushi
Norwegians can’t tell the difference between Japanese/Koreans and Chinese, Vietnamese, etc. They are so fucking imbecile, not used to foreigners at all. What an isolated shit country! And since their food is easily the worst in Europe (except perhaps for Finland) they gladly eat shit! Shit-eaters!!
Rune seems so much more well educated and globetrotter’ish than the rest of us - no? Big mistake…
But Rune, neither Nodee, Alex or Jonoe are run by Japanese, you know that, right (I agree, the food is excellent)? In my experience, a good sushi chef is a good sushi chef, regardless of nationality. So why the offensive language?
Min liste
1. Art of Sushi
2. Alex
3. Nodee
4. Mitsu
5. jonoe
Hei,
Digger sushi og har prøvd mange rundt omkring i Oslo området.
Ny resturant som bare er helt sinnsykt bra på sushi og min klare favorit heretter.
Alle burde dra innom hvis dere er glad i sushi .
1. Art of sushi ( Asker)
2. Alex
3. Nodee
4. Vindern ( husker ikke navnet)
5 Hous of Sushi
I don’t understand how Japosushi can show up on anyone’s favorite list. I was beginning to wonder if my tastebuds were heading south. But I’m glad to see that other experienced sushi eaters share my view. Many of the sushi restuarants in Oslo can be deemed as “ok-acceptable”, but I agree…… with Japosushi…..it is THAT bad. That one AND only visit, I noticed water dripping inside the refrigerator where the sushi is stored. ewwwwwwww
Anyway, here is my top 5 favorite sushi list:
1. Alex (expensive for your weekly sushi hunt, at least for most people)
2. Nodee (good sushi, but on the pricier side)
3. Kitty Sushi (good everyday sushi, but pricier than Mitsu)
4. Mitsu Kafe (value for money; your everyday sushi)
5. Jonae Sushi (?) @ Vindern (good, but pricey)
Good to know that many of my favorites have also been mentioned above. Let’s keep this list alive and update whenever one discovers a new favorite. Word of mouth is supreme!
